Romanticizing Your Life

They say romance is dead, but you don’t need a partner to create romance in your life. Romance is in the air as they say, it is everywhere. Creating romantic moments is easier than you think. By embracing the idea of romance you can open yourself up to small moments in your everyday life.

Turn your morning cup of coffee into a Nancy Meyer’s moment. Light a candle, pour your coffee into your favorite cup, write in your journal with a fancy pen, read a good book, or simply gaze out your window. Take in the morning sights and sounds, perhaps birds, the wind, or bugs. Maybe you have a beautiful sunrise or the most puffy clouds or perfectly clear sky. If nature is not your vibe turn on some music and reflect.

During lunch write a quick note to a friend or family member. Use your best hand writing and stationary. That’s right bring back stationary! Or perhaps make a quick phone call to tell someone you are thinking of them.

At dinner turn down the lights. Use the candles that never get lit. Plan to use the fancy plates, cups, and silverware. Serve the dinner in your tucked away platters. Use your linens instead of paper towels. Make a house playlist and don’t be afraid to dance in the kitchen!

At night wind down with a cozy blanket on the couch with your comfiest pajamas. Take time to reflect on your day.

Do things in your day that you would be excited to write about in your journal that night. Adding romance to your life is about connection with others or yourself. So many things have taken us away from connection. We have become a digital society. Handwriting a letter feels different than sending an email. Cooking by pulling out your family recipe book feels different than pulling up a recipe on your phone. Reading a book feels different than scrolling on your device. Even as I type this blog on my computer I wrote it out on paper prior. It just feels different.

When designing I like to think about the connections and details that the items in the space will provide. You pick the beautiful stationary. You design the art, accessories, and the flow of the house to fit the needs of the home owner. You create moments in the house. You help display the heirlooms and priceless objects in hopes that the family can appreciate them not only visually, but by using them. To romanticize your life is to create the most idealized view of reality and so bring out the glasses, china, and silverware. Display the family photos and write the to-do lists and letters. Walk through your house with all the lamps on and watch the warm glow it creates. In doing this you will see how wonderful and romantic your life truly is.
