    Antiques

In the last year, I have started to embrace the art of antiquing although when I think back my first antique was acquired when I was young from my grandmother. The thrill of finding treasures that speak to you, not as in haunted or possessed, but speak to your sense of design and style. Antiques provide a sort of depth to design. Having an item that is unique draws the eye into the room. Layer them in a room and it allows your eyes to keep searching. The room does not lay flat and remains interesting. It makes the room feel eclectic and full of stories.

The art of the hunt involves technique. I first scan the area. If something catches my eye I will typically examine it a little closer. I don’t necessarily know where I will put it in my home, but I will tell you I always find a place. Before I look at the price I try to come up with an amount that I would be willing to pay. If the amount is close to that amount I will put it in my cart. I continue browsing looking for things that catch my eye. If the shop is small I tend to make two rounds. I sometimes find something the second time around and wonder why I didn’t see it before. In a larger setting, I have learned to grab something I am on the fence about because I will either forget where it was or not have time to go back to it. Word to the wise – if you love it put it in your cart. Antique regret is real. Ask me how many times I would leave something behind only to have to make my way back to the shop to get it later. If it is close by it’s not such a big deal (unless it’s gone), but if you travel far it’s much harder to go back. Another tip is that I prefer to go with at least one other person. It makes it more fun, but two sets of eyes are better than one. A lot of times my sister, Erin, will find something for my home before me. We do have a golden rule that whoever saw it first gets first dibs. Also, go at your own pace. Don’t rush through. Scan closely and don’t be afraid to move things around. Sometimes the best treasures are not clearly visible.

Antique shopping allows me to get my shopping fix without breaking the bank. If I go into Target for one thing I come out having spent hundreds of dollars, and on things every influencer has in their house. When I go antique shopping I might walk out with one or two items or perhaps none. When I do get something I know that it will be unique to my home. I have learned even with antiques some items are more common than others and the cost can vary greatly on them. Negotiating costs with a vendor is something that I recommend. Most sellers are willing to budge a little on the price and it makes me feel like I not only got an incredibly unique item, but a deal as well.
